One Year Ago I Visited NYC

Ya, so I was looking through tumblr drafts I never posted and found this entry about a trip I took last year with one of my comedy partners in crime, Joyelle.  For some reason I just let it sit for a year so now I’ve decided to set it free.

After 400 songs on the schizo ipod, 800 miles, a pit stop in Jersey and a number of hours we forgot to count, the all night drive from Georgia was conquered and we made it to New York!

Madness

o weird

Driving all night has it’s side effects

So I survived my 1st day in New York City without being peed on, evicted or punched in the face so I’m doing pretty good as far as urban legends go.

As soon as we pulled up to our place in the city at 5 pm an ice cream truck drove by blaring 50’s 21 questions….with bass…it was an ice cream truck.  Interesting choice to lure the kids in for frozen treats, ”Do you trust me enough, to tell me your dreams? I’m staring at ya’ trying to figure how you got in them jeans.” ~50 Cent Actually maybe that’s just what the kids wanna hear…

I helped my boy, Damien, bark tickets for a show that ended up being cancelled anyway. All good though cuz I got some pics that made me look like I actually performed.

Chilled in Washington Square Park by the fountain but didn’t get in because I, unlike my counterparts pictured above, am not always prepared to get my feet wet at a moments notice.  THESE NIGGAS STAY FLIP FLOP READY

NY pizza

Had my 1st slice of New York pizza in New York! It was just as good as the legends say…but I also hadn’t eaten in 30 minutes so I was pretty hungry.

black pussy catFinally found “The Fat Black Pussy Cat” and learned it was the place New Yorkers make friendsies. Surprisingly, I didn’t make any new pals here and am kinda disappointed in the advertising….besides don’t they know black pussy cats are bad luck?

empire state of mind

And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for, Did Odinaka Ezeokoli manage to survive a whole day in New York City without hearing Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind?

Drumroll please……..

Yes, yes I did! It was close because I almost listened to the regular hip hop station but I caught myself and changed the dial before it was too late.

Stay tuned in to find out if I can maintain my distance from the Empire for 5 more days.

Update: I lasted pretty long w/out hearing the whole song but alas, on the last day of my stay, 6 days in to be exact, I think I heard parts of “Empire…” at least 3 times! *shakes fists*

Clearly I had intentions to write about the whole week—Hell, it took me a year to post about the 1st day. Ahhh procrastination.

Peace

A Mistaken Tale of Two Negroes

It’s been a while since I mentioned any close encounters of the psuedo-doppleganger kind on this blog

When I found out I’d be a part of this year’s Cape Fear Comedy Festival and that Kyle Grooms would be headlining I said:

Anytime I’m in close proximity to another skinny black dude w/ glasses somebody’s bound to get confused.  This weekend was no exception.

While I was standing at the bar a pair of women tapped me on the shoulder and asked, “Hey can we take a picture with you.” I was surprised but said sure cuz after all, I was wearing a tie.

Then she said, “I loved you on Chappelle Show…” and I quickly realized I wasn’t who they thought I was.

“Oh no, my name’s Odinaka. I’ve only been on youtube. You’re thinking about Kyle Grooms who isn’t here yet…” Then they tried to convince me that I was indeed Kyle Grooms and should stop joking. I gave them a business card and a few awkward laughs later we parted ways and I went on to do my set.

Anyway, here’s a grainy photo of me and Kyle.

Would you get us confused?

I mean seriously

Look at us

Give me your honest opinion lol

Happy Valentine’s Day!

From Andre 3000, my friend, babiscorp86, & Naka On Wood!

Who doesn’t like this one from 3 Stacks? And the Sims themed video babiscorp made is kinda hot.

In the spirit of today we’ve got a dope show planned tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar for all my Atlanta folks.

F OFf V Day Show

F-Off V-Day

I know these are two dueling messages—the syrupy sweet video up top and a lynched heart at the bottom.  But we live in a world of dichotomies, people.  Everything’s not cut and dry.  Anyway, If you’re gonna be getting some tonight, you might as well laugh beforehand.

And a happy Monday for everybody else that doesn’t care either way

This morning a friend of mine shared (via Google Reader) a note by Odinaka saying that OD was thrilled to be opening for Maria Bamford at the comedy club here in town tonight and tomorrow, and said I should try to make it out. I thought I’d be busy with rehearsals, but as it happens I wasn’t called tonight, so I made reservations and decided to go.

At about 3:45, it started snowing. The department of transportation in Nashville had only stocked enough salt to cook a decent pot of spaghetti, and had used it all up back during the FIRST #snowpunsignifyingtheendoftheworld of the year, and couldn’t be bothered to go out to Kroger or Publix or wherever and get some more salt, so the roads which would ordinarily be only mildly treacherous were actually pretty dang dangerous, and it took me an hour and a half to make it a distance that normally only requires twenty minutes to traverse.

By that time reports were coming in of three-hour commutes, and it looked to be getting worse before it got better—but perseverance won the day, and I made it out to the club, and Bamford was wildly entertaining (as was OD, although the sound system didn’t carry his voice well).

The roads are still nasty slick, and bridges are still salt-free and will be treacherous tomorrow, but I’m home and curled up in bed and entertained. Here’s some Maria Bamford for the rest of you.

Hey thanks so much for braving the snow to come out! That shit was thick!  We were afraid folks would be scared to leave their homes but y’all were a live-ass audience! Definitely appreciate it!

Excuse Me While I Nerd Out— I’m Featuring For Maria Bamford!

Tonight and Thursday I get to perform with one of the best comedians working today!  And it completely boggles my mind that I can type that right now. Seriously, it does. I’m mad geeked!  To the point that I’m typing at 3 am when I should be sleeping.  Actually that’s everyday for me, nevermind.

I was originally just supposed to do an innocent little guest set…

I tweeted this in reply…

And somehow this happened!

So I’m getting paid to tell jokes along side one of my favorite comedians!?  HOW?! I still don’t think I fully understand that this is happening.  The mere thought makes me want to bash something into my head to make sure I’m still checked in with reality.  Just last week I off-handedly remarked that we should be friends. Now we’ll be sharing a stage.  I hope I don’t crush under the waves of anxiousness between now and 7:30 tomorrow. Wish me leg breakage!  I’m gonna go pretend to sleep.

Oh and if you just happen to be in Nashville, TN Wed and Thur night come on over to Zanies Comedy Club.  Guaranteed good time.

And for the uninitiated, if you’re not up on Maria Bamford—C’mon son! It’s not too late tho…

I always like to think the reason I was always ahead in English subjects my whole life was because I successfully learned to spell my full name. Oh and my parents are Vin and Julie, I feel this guy’s pain! haha

Lol, shout out to Chukwuma. Glad you could relate bros!

GPOYW: 40 Acres Crew Edition

So as you may know, 40 Acres and a Stool had our 1st show last Thursday and Avidity Photography was there to snap us in action.  She got some great shots and some even flyer ones were taken at our photo shoot a few weeks prior.  I’ll post those later. Happy humping…day.
