Up & Comer Interview: Rob HaZe

Meet one of my boys, @robertistheman

atlantastandsup:

About 10 months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Rob HaZe after seeing him perform at New Earth Music Hall in Athens, GA, as part of AthFest 2010. Just in this short period of time, Rob has grown as a comic by leaps and bounds; landing him a coveted spot within the increasingly popular 40 Acres and a Stool comedy group (Dulcé Sloan, Odinaka Ezeokoli, A.K., & Joyelle Johnson).

As a hilarious combination of witty and silly, all I can say is that it’s about damn time Rob got some attention. Not only is he funny, but he’s a delightful person to be around; always happy to be getting on stage and eager to bring the funny.

Rock on, Rob!

Jessica Hinckle: What has it been like for you since you dove into the local comedy scene?

Rob Haze: It has been great moving here from Athens, this past August; everyone has been really supportive. It’s like a big family and everyone has welcomed me with open arms.

This morning a friend of mine shared (via Google Reader) a note by Odinaka saying that OD was thrilled to be opening for Maria Bamford at the comedy club here in town tonight and tomorrow, and said I should try to make it out. I thought I’d be busy with rehearsals, but as it happens I wasn’t called tonight, so I made reservations and decided to go.

At about 3:45, it started snowing. The department of transportation in Nashville had only stocked enough salt to cook a decent pot of spaghetti, and had used it all up back during the FIRST #snowpunsignifyingtheendoftheworld of the year, and couldn’t be bothered to go out to Kroger or Publix or wherever and get some more salt, so the roads which would ordinarily be only mildly treacherous were actually pretty dang dangerous, and it took me an hour and a half to make it a distance that normally only requires twenty minutes to traverse.

By that time reports were coming in of three-hour commutes, and it looked to be getting worse before it got better—but perseverance won the day, and I made it out to the club, and Bamford was wildly entertaining (as was OD, although the sound system didn’t carry his voice well).

The roads are still nasty slick, and bridges are still salt-free and will be treacherous tomorrow, but I’m home and curled up in bed and entertained. Here’s some Maria Bamford for the rest of you.

Hey thanks so much for braving the snow to come out! That shit was thick!  We were afraid folks would be scared to leave their homes but y’all were a live-ass audience! Definitely appreciate it!

Shout out to the good folks over at Creative Loafing for profiling me as their ATL Comic of the week.  Pretty cool all the love I’ve been getting from folks since this went up.  All very humbling and much appreciated!
“There’s something familiar but intriguing about comedian Odinaka “OD” Ezeokoli that endears audiences to him…”

Atlanta’s Laughing Skull Lounge just added a local comedians section to their website where my picture and bio are currently hanging out, along with those of many other fine ATL jokesters.  Nothing you can’t already see on this fine blog but you know…just thought I’d share. Because who doesn’t like looking at my picture and bio?

*Performing with Godfrey this Friday and Sunday at the Laughing Skull Lounge here in Atlanta and am low key, geeky excited.  I remember back in 2002, I had just come back to the States after graduating from High School in Nigeria and saw this dude on TV talking about Nigerians and he had me howling.

Seeing someone, that not only looked like me but was also from where I was from, on Comedy Central blew my 18 year old mind. “Nigerians doing stand up? Get outta here!” lol
After seeing Godfrey I got up the next day and bought my first joke book where I recorded every funny thought I had there after.  I still didn’t gather the courage to actually get on stage and tell jokes to a live audience until a few years later but that night in my living room was a pivotal moment for me.  It’s funny how that happens though, I always loved and wanted to try stand up comedy since I was 11 but thought it was way too far fetched to even attempt until seeing someone similar to me on TV doing it.
And now I get to perform with Godfrey this weekend.  So it’s a childhood fulfillment of sorts.  And if he turns out to be an asshole we’ll just forget I ever wrote this.

Rooftop Daily 8

I don’t know why Rooftop keeps picking on me but I can take the abuse.  Featured on Rooftopcomedy.com’s daily 8 today for one of my jokes about my experience seeing Nigeria for the first time.  Not the best version of this but it’s out there so…voila. Rooftop featured one of my other jokes about the greatest rapper of all time on Monday, check it out here.

Some very funny folks on rooftop’s Daily 8 today too, Adam Newman, who got his start here in Ga before moving to NYC, Pat Dixon, another NYC transplant from Ga whose absolutely hilarious, Nick Thune who you might’ve seen doing something funny on TV somewhere and some other folks I’m just being introduced to.

Featured on Rooftop Comedy’s Daily 8 today!  Well for 2 more hours but you ain’t gotta worry about that cuz you’re already here.

Jokes on the greatest rapper of all time Just in time for Columbus Day!  I’m sure he would understand that there’s no connection necessary for me to say that.

Also check out their feature comic of the day, Hari Kondabolu.  He’s one of my favorite comedians out right now.  Equally hilarious and insightful.

But wait, there’s more! Click now and you can see my old jokes on Confederate Memorial Day and…wait for it…Columbus Day

It seems that people who make things are often remembered for the best things that they made. So, if I like Monty Python, what I know the most are my favorite sketches, and if I like the Beatles, it’s probably because of my favorite songs of theirs. In a weird way, it seems like time is really kind to the person who makes a lot of things, because as time goes on, the best things seem to float to the top and those are the ones that people notice. What I extract from that is, to just make as much stuff as possible and don’t be self conscious about the quality of it. As long as you’re learning along the way, and you don’t stop making stuff, it seems like you have more chances of making the good stuff that kind of floats to the top … It seems like volume is the answer. … It’s not the deepest thing, but I have found that if I just really make a lot of stuff, then I regret less.

Had a cool photo session with Chad Hess in East Atlanta last week.  Here’s a lil look at what we did.

Cori Healy’s a funny comedian.  Her CD would make a good after-Christmas-Boxing-Day gift.  Think about it…then do it.
